Dima Al Malakeh – Bio
Born in Damascus in 1974, Dima Al Malakeh grew up in the oldest Capital in the world with its enchanting jasmine trees, beautiful gardens and narrow allies, and from a family with a long intellectual diverse history. Great music, gifted artists and all the beauty and diversity in this ancient city influenced and helped shape Dima’s imaginational and artistic flair.
After losing her father, her mentor and her friend, Dima manifested her anger, her love and her teenage years on the walls of her room ruining the wall paper but preserving her sanity. In college she travelled the beautiful world of literature with her brushes and started creating the imaginary worlds of her dreams, sketching the wavy black lines of freedom using symbols, icons and words but always with a twist at the end.

“I don’t recall my first fascination with art, but I do remember loving my crayons and drawing pad very early in my life, with my father’s encouragement I slowly started breaking those shacks that tie our imagination up and limit our brains inside a box of taboos and prohibitions”
After attending an intensive drawing course at Centre Adham Ismail of Visual Arts and graduating from Damascus University, Faculty of Arts, English Literature in 2000, Dima embarked on a career as an artist with an approach that challenges her imagination as symbols became more powerful in her paintings this time with the feelings of a mature woman exploring the universe around her. The paintings depicted are not only about her inner feelings, but her experiences in life, the major events and the small details. She draws for love, heart breaks, success and failure, life and death; she simply paints life as she sees it.

Dima looks at symbolism in terms of shape, colour and line as the most powerful tools in the hands of an artist to help him convey his / her ideas and interpret the feelings of the moment regardless of the subject, as art is secular and doesn’t belong to a group, religion or ideology. Her paintings are characterized by the use of symbols political, religious, or social, with Arabic calligraphy and English writings, and sometimes she uses Chinese, Indian and Japanese symbols. In constant search of what enriches the idea, and translates the message behind every line and colour.

First Exhibition “Mental Symptoms”:

Is the artists’ first solo exhibition, and first experience outside her country Syria, here in Dubai. She presented 21 paintings; each belongs to a period of time, related to certain people and places. Dima wanted to put all of them in one exhibition, where all the paintings’ history stretches from 1991 – 2011. “I wanted to express evil through good, love through hate, and greed through content and happiness through sadness. For me these contradicting emotions form our past, present and future!”

Born in 1974 Damascus, Syria.
In 1993 attended an intensive drawing course at Centre Adham Ismail of Visual Arts.
In 2000 graduated from Damascus University, Faculty of Arts; English Literature.
In 2003 moved to Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
In 2008 occupied the position of PR & Marketing Manager at a prestigious Haute Couture house in Dubai.
In 2010 joined Free Dome Media Company as their PR & Marketing Manager.
At the moment Dima is an independent painter, launched her first art exhibition on 11-01-2011
